I was humbled to be invited to the Klesis Osaka Networking Night on May 10th. The event was held at the At Business Center in Umeda and brought together a diverse group of around 25 participants—both Japanese and international residents of Japan. Not quite knowing what to expect, I approached this opportunity for discovery with an open, curious mind.
The only other “networking” event I’d ever attended was a massive conference with thousands of people crammed into a warehouse, where each conversation felt like a polite performance—exaggerated smiles, rushed introductions, and the unspoken calculation from both parties of when to move on to the next, more “valuable” person. This evening with Klesis could not have been more different.
As people slowly trickled into the room before the start time, small clusters of mutual friends naturally formed. But what struck me was how effortlessly it was to bridge those clusters. A simple glance toward someone new was enough to spark a warm introduction and genuine conversation. Even I, coming from my background as an English teacher, received enthusiastic nods and affirming smiles when I shared my not-so-business-like endeavors. There was a quiet but unmistakable energy in the room—people were genuinely excited to meet and connect with one another.
The evening began with 30-second self-introductions from each attendee, giving everyone a chance to share a little about themselves and their interests. This simple but thoughtful touch set the tone for a night of meaningful exchange. After the introductions, we each received a bento dinner and naturally turned to chat with those seated nearby. Conversations flowed easily, covering everything from career paths to deeper personal motivations.
Once we’d settled in, Michito, Representative Director of Klesis, shared a powerful message that anchored the entire evening. He expertly wove together themes of faith, business, mission, and vocation—all centering around the concept of “calling.” He invited us to consider what we were made to do and how our professional lives can be an extension of our deeper purpose. His reflections provided a thoughtful and inspiring foundation for everything that followed.
The guest speaker, Mr. Kan, CEO of GLG Group, then took the stage to share his personal business journey. What struck me most wasn’t just his strategy or success—though those were certainly impressive—but the sheer heart and determination he poured into every step of his path. He spoke about working at a takoyaki stand as a young man, an experience that, though humble, fundamentally shaped his approach to both business and people. He also described a pivotal encounter with someone who happened to be a fellow Christian and ultimately played a key role in helping his business take shape.
I had always assumed that successful entrepreneurs were simply smarter or more strategic than the rest of us, but listening to Mr. Kan made me realize how much drive and passion also factor into the equation. He pursued his dream with genuine urgency, and his story reminded me that when we open ourselves up to possibilities, even blessed “coincidences” can emerge. His words were both energizing and deeply moving.
The group discussion that followed proved particularly engaging. Participants eagerly shared their thoughts, questions, and personal insights. What impressed me most was how people applied the evening’s concepts to one another’s work contexts with remarkable clarity and generosity. I was struck by everyone’s willingness to offer genuine value and encouragement to others, rather than focusing on self-promotion. It stood in stark contrast to the typical networking event, where everyone seems to be subtly angling for their own advantage.
The final portion of the evening opened up for free conversation, where discussions continued more informally. Some people exchanged contact information, while others lingered at their tables in deeper discussion. Perhaps the only “challenge” was that the time felt far too short. There was a strong sense that the group had only just begun to tap into the potential of what could be shared and created together. Many attendees expressed a desire to continue the conversations beyond the evening itself, and several new connections hinted at future collaborations.
In all, it was an inspiring night—one that left us looking forward to the next opportunity to gather, learn, and grow together. If you’re someone in business looking for more than just superficial networking, if you’re seeking genuine connection and wanting to explore how your work might connect to a deeper sense of purpose, I’d wholeheartedly recommend checking out what Klesis has to offer. The combination of practical business insight, meaningful community, and thoughtful reflection on calling creates something truly unique in the business world.
